I have a Dell account but when I was at their site I got utterly confused. There are so many add ons, bells, whistles, warantees etc. What do I really want/need?

My fiance' wants to be able to work on her pictures/scrap books mainly. Other than that internet, maybe downloading/copying cd's. That is really about all we need. Anyone that has a clue about this stuff, I would really appriciate the help.

If you have a Fry's in your area, they usually have very good deals. I'm sure if you are like me and not using it for anything too fancy, they would have what you need.

If it's not for work, get a Mac. The included software is more than adequate for the needs you have described.

I have a work laptop. The home version will be for surfing and for her picture stuff. Not sure why, but the Mac scares me. I feel like I would have to learn how to do everything all over again.

I hear ya. And I don't blame you for not wanting to jump ship.
Ask yourself a question, though. Have you ever heard someone say "I love my Windows based PC?"

I can tell you this, go without a computer and internet completely for a few months and you'll see how much the world has changed.

For these tasks you need a desktop that costs about $500. If you need an onsite service and willing to pay go with Dell's entry level Dimension. If you are willing to take you machine for service to a local shop then buy an HP. If you do not require brand name machine then you will actually get the best computer for your money from your local computer shop that make custom computers.

Thanks guys. If I do go with Dell, are the accident coverage and such a waste of money? They have so many "add-ons" that it can double the price.

Yes.

You do not need any of those.

Here is the skinny of Dell's model. "We have a $500 machine that we sell for $1200. But since you are valued customer, we'll give you a $500 discount and a free printer that retails for $80."
